Disapproval Falls to New Low Amid Widespread Optimism
Donald Trump begins his second nonconsecutive term in the White House with the highest approval rating on record at BIG DATA POLL. The survey was conducted by BIG DATA POLL as part of the Public Polling Project for January 2025.
Nationally, 55.5% of registered voters approve of the way he is handling the start of his presidency, a new high mark since tracking begin during his first term. Meanwhile, a record low 37.4% disapprove of his handling of the presidency, leaning an almost unheard-of 7% unsure.
“In the roughly year-long period leading up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election in November, we repeatedly identified and stressed a positive trend for both his image and retrospective approval rating,” BIG DATA POLL Director Rich Baris, said. “Nearly three months later, that trend has carried the president’s popularity to new heights, and it’s being fueled by the same demographics who helped propel him to another term.”
Several key groups played a significant role in the then-former and now-current president’s victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris, to include Hispanic, black and younger voters. For now, at least, it would appear those groups are pleased with their decision. In fact, a significant percentage of various subgroups who voted for Harris in November now at least somewhat approve of her opponent.
President Trump enjoys a 53.0% approval rating among Hispanics, with only 39.3% disapproving. Both subgroups of voters age 18-29 approve by a majority, and strong plurality of black voters (44.5%) agree. Of voters 18-24, 52.1% approve and an even larger majority (56.4%) approve among voters 25-29 years old.
Methodology
The Public Polling Project conducted by BIG DATA POLL interviewed 2,979 registered voters nationwide from January 19 to January 22, 2024. Interviews conducted online are sourced through Lucid (CINT) and live-agent phone interviews including P2P SMS and text-to-online are sourced from the Aristotle National Voter File Database. Participants who opted for text-to-online were given 24 hours to complete the interview. Interview details plotted on maps can be reviewed by hovering and clicking on the locator pins. Results were weighted for sex, age, race and ethnicity, education, and region. The overall sampling error is ±1.8% at a 95% confidence interval. It is important to note that sampling errors for subgroups are higher. All BIG DATA POLL publicly conducted surveys are crowdfunded via the Public Polling Project, supplemented if necessary by BIG DATA POLL and are NOT funded by or affiliated with any candidate, campaign, committee, or political entity.
